One of the early muscle cars was the Oldsmobile 88

The Oldsmobile 88 was one of the first true muscle vehicles, however opinions on the origin of the muscle car may differ. From 1949 through 1999, the American automobile manufacturer Oldsmobile created and offered the Oldsmobile 88. The Oldsmobile 88 had a top speed of 135 mph and a tiny, light body with a sophisticated super V8 engine. When the vehicle won six times in the late division races, it left its stamp on NASCAR's (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing) history. Oldsmobile 88 served as the inspiration for the catchphrase "Make a Date with a Rocket 88" and the rock tune "Rocket 88."
