Russia said its troops had broken through Ukrainian defenses to infiltrate the besieged southern port city of Mariupol, a scene of rising desperation, during the attack, which took place not far from the country's western Romanian border. Mikhailo Podolyak, a prominent Zelensky adviser, pleaded with China to denounce the invasion.
