National oil marketing companies increased the price of the 14.2-kg cylinder by INR 50 on May 7. This means that households will have to spend more on LPG. The rise, which is the second in less than two months, raises the price of a household cylinder of cooking gas to more than INR 1,000 in Chennai and Kolkata and to INR 999.50 in Delhi and Mumbai. Households in Hyderabad must now set aside INR 1,052 for a cylinder after spending over INR 1,000 since the previous rise on March 22. Coming at a time when household budgets are already being squeezed by growing prices of everyday products such as milk and edible oil, as well as increased expenditure on commutes due to high petrol and diesel prices, the LPG price hike is sure to add to the burden.
