Soumen Roy, a BJP MLA, joined the ruling TMC on Saturday, apologising for leaving the state party two years ago. Since the April-May assembly election, he is the fourth BJP MLA to switch to the TMC. Mr. Roy, who was elected on a BJP ticket from Kaliaganj in the April-May assembly election in the presence of party secretary general Partha Chatterjee, said he was not happy in the saffron camp and wanted to participate in Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's development plans. Mukul Roy, the BJP's national vice-president, had returned to the TMC with his son Subhransu in May, just days after winning the Krishnanagar South seat on the saffron party's ticket. He was followed by three additional TMC dissenters who had run for election on the BJP ticket, won, and then returned to the TMC. Mr. Roy's switchover prompted state opposition leader and BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari to tell reporters, "Whoever leaves the party it is his decision. But the party will seek their disqualification after asking them to explain their stand."
