Following the government's decision to decrease excise duty on auto fuels, the price of petrol was cut by 8.69 per litre on Sunday, and the price of diesel was cut by 7.05 per litre, providing respite to customers who had been hit by high fuel prices that had pushed inflation to a record high. On Saturday, the government announced a record-low excise duty drop of INR 8 per litre for gasoline and INR 6 for diesel. Petrol now costs 96.72 per litre in the national capital, down from 105.41 earlier. A price announcement from state-owned fuel dealers revealed that diesel is now priced at 89.62 per litre, down from 96.67 previously. Petrol prices in Mumbai have been reduced to 111.35 per litre from 120.51, while diesel prices have been reduced to 97.28 per litre from 104.77. In Kolkata, petrol costs 106.03 per litre (formerly 115.12) and 102.63 in Chennai (was 110.85). In Kolkata, diesel costs 92.76 a litre (formerly 99.83) and 94.24 in Chennai (previously 100.94).
