A. Sharath Kamal, India's flag-bearer in table tennis, has advanced to the round of 32 in the men's singles event in Tokyo. Sharath advanced to the third round of the men's singles after defeating Tiago Apolonia of Portugal. Sharath, who was seeded 20th, used his powerful backhand wins to defeat his Chennai teammate in six games in the Ultimate Table Tennis competition. Sharath was victorious with scores of 2-11, 11-8, 11-5, 9-11, 11-6, 11-9. Sharath will face Ma Long of China, the defending Olympic and World champion, in the round of 32. In the women's third round, however, 10th seed Sofia Polcanova of Austria proved too strong for Manika Batra, while Sutirtha Mukherjee was unable to hold off 32nd seed Fu Yu of Portugal.
