The number of coronavirus infections in Hong Kong has surpassed one million, as the city battles a massive outbreak that has killed more people than the total number of COVID-19 deaths in mainland China. On March 18, health officials announced 20,079 confirmed infections, bringing the total number of confirmed infections to 10,16,944 since the outbreak began. The current wave in Hong Kong, which began in December, accounted for over 97 percent of those. Coronavirus has claimed the lives of nearly 5,200 people since February 9. The total number of deaths in Hong Kong — 5,401 — has surpassed the mainland China tally of 4,636. Authorities on the Chinese mainland have reported 1,26,234 confirmed cases, although unlike most nations, China does not include asymptomatic cases in its total. The metropolis of 7.4 million people is seeing an omicron boom, which has put a strain on its health-care system as hospitals exceed capacity.
