The meteorological department reported on Saturday that northwest and central India saw their hottest April in 122 years, with average maximum temperatures of 35.9 and 37.78 degrees Celsius, respectively. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director General of the India Meteorological Department, warned in a news conference that temperatures in the northwest and west central areas of the country - Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab, and Haryana - will remain above normal in May. In most parts of the country, except for some sections of south peninsular India, nights will be warmer in May, according to Mr Mohapatra. According to him, the average temperature across India in April was 35.05 degrees, the fourth highest in 122 years. However, he predicts that rainfall in sections of northwest and northeast India, as well as the extreme southeast Peninsula, would be below normal in May.
