Nagaland and Meghalaya election update

As of 9 a.m. today, 15.76% of eligible voters had cast votes in the Nagaland Assembly Elections, compared to 12.96% in Meghalaya. In both states, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged voters to vote in large numbers, especially young people and first-time voters. Almost 13 lakh voters in Nagaland will choose between 183 candidates running for 59 of a total of 60 seats. More than 21.6 lakh voters will decide the fate of 369 candidates in Meghalaya, where voting is taking place in 59 of the 60 Assembly seats. Voter registration is open until 4 p.m., and on March 2 the votes will be counted. The Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP), which is currently in power in Nagaland, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), who are running as an alliance, are splitting the vote 40:20 each, with Neiphiu Rio standing for chief minister. Congress and the Naga People's Front (NPF) are vying for 22 and 23 seats, respectively.
