A big demonstration is taking place outside the Sangrur home of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, who is campaigning in Gujarat ahead of the western state's assembly elections. The police are using batons to try to control the throng as they struggle with the protesting farm workers and trade unions. Dramatic images from the scene showed the cops beating the flag-waving, slogan-yelling protesters. The protesters are requesting that the state government execute the 5 marla land scheme and raise the MNREGA (National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme) minimum daily wage to 700 rupees. The demonstrators also demand an increase in compensation for land acquisition, help for farmers who have lost animals to lumpy skin disease, and compensation for agricultural damage. Dalits should also have a 33% participation in village cooperative societies.
