Kolkata saw a massive increase today, with the daily case count more than doubling to 1,090 from 540 the day before. Today's daily cases in the city increased by 101.85%. In the same time period, Bengal had 2,128 cases with 12 deaths. According to the official health bulletin, the state's case positivity rate has risen to 5.4 percent. The Union Health Ministry reported earlier today that Kolkata has one of the highest case positivity rates in the country, at 12.5 percent, and that Bengal is one of the developing "states of concern" based on weekly cases and positivity rate. Gujarat, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Delhi, and Maharashtra are the other states. The Centre has identified a "sudden surge" in Covid cases in 14 cities and has written to eight states, including Delhi, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Kerala, and Telangana, requesting them to take prompt action to stem the tide. In addition, cases of the highly infectious Omicron form are quickly growing in and around major cities.
