After recent scorching temperatures harmed production, India barred wheat exports without prior government approval on Saturday, dealing a blow to countries suffering from supply shortages as a result of the Ukraine crisis. India, the world's second-largest wheat producer, said it was concerned about its own "food security" due to factors such as lower wheat production and dramatically higher global prices as a result of the war. All export agreements made before Friday's announcement may still be honored, but all future shipments would require government clearance. Exports, on the other hand, could happen if New Delhi approves a request from other governments to "meet their food security needs." The decision was made at a time when global agricultural markets were undergoing significant stress as a result of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. "If everyone starts to impose export restrictions or to close markets, that would worsen the crisis," German agriculture minister Cem Ozdemir stated at a press conference in Stuttgart.
