The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday postponed the Punjab Assembly elections from February 14 to February 20, citing concerns from the state government and political parties that many worshippers will be in Varanasi on February 16 to commemorate Guru Ravidas' birth anniversary and will be unable to vote. Many devotees begin travelling to Varanasi a week before the celebrations, according to ECI submissions, and polling on February 14 would deny them the opportunity to vote. The ECI said in a press release that the poll will be rescheduled. The poll schedule issued on January 8 said that counting would resume on March 10.
