Cyclone Asani approaches the east coast on Tuesday

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported severe cyclone Asani approached the east coast on Tuesday, with gale-force gusts of up to 105 kmph and signs of gradual weakening.

According to the last advisory released at 4.30 PM, the cyclone, which was moving at 5 kmph in the morning, increased to 25 kmph later in the day. It is located around 210 km south-southeast of Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh and 530 km south-southwest of Gopalpur in Odisha. On Tuesday evening, the system is likely to recurve and move north-northeast parallel to the coast. 

According to IMD Director General Mrutunjay Mohapatra, cyclone Asani has already reached its maximum intensity and is gradually weakening. Puri and Khurda received light to moderate rainfall, but heavy rain is expected in several areas of north coastal Andhra Pradesh and coastal Odisha starting Tuesday night.
