More than two months after COVID-19 immunization became available in the country for the 15-17-year-old age group, the Centre has announced plans to expand the programme to include the 12-14-year-old age group beginning March 16. According to government data, India's population in this age group is predicted to be 7.11 crore. Corbevax, a receptor binding domain protein sub unit vaccine developed in partnership with Baylor College in the United States, would be given to the younger adolescents by Hyderabad-based Biological E. The Drug Controller General of India issued emergency use authorization for this vaccine, which is to be given in two doses 28 days apart, in December of last year for use in 12-plus population groups. Importantly, the government has determined that, as of March 16, the requirement of co-morbidity for COVID-19 precaution dose for people over 60 would be eliminated.
