In the midst of a protracted dispute between the executive and the judiciary over the appointment process, the centre on Saturday cleared the names of five judges for the Supreme Court, nearly two months after they had been proposed. Pankaj Mithal of the Rajasthan High Court, Sanjay Karol of the Patna High Court, PV Sanjay Kumar of the Manipur High Court, Ahsanuddin Amanullah of the Patna High Court, and Manoj Misra of the Allahabad High Court will now serve as the judges of the Supreme Court. On Monday, the judges will take the oath of office. The centre, which was being questioned by the top court, had earlier promised that the suggestions of the collegium, a group of judges, for the elevation of five justices to the high court, would be resolved by Sunday.
