The Cabinet Committee on Security approved the purchase of 56 C-295 medium transport aircraft for the Indian Air Force on Wednesday, replacing the Indian Air Force's old Avro planes, which were initially inducted roughly 60 years ago. According to the defence ministry, Airbus Defence and Space of Spain would deliver 16 aircraft in flyaway condition within 48 months after signing the contract, while the remaining 40 planes will be produced in India. According to those acquainted with the project, the procurement will cost between Rs 18,000 and Rs 20,000 crore. Within ten years of signing the contract, a combination of Airbus Defence and Space and Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) will produce the 40 planes in India.
